It happens more than you’d like to admit: You’re going about your day, maybe cooking dinner or watching TV, when bam—your IBS hits.

You rush to your bathroom, only to find it a mess. Wet towel on the floor, dirty sink, and oh, your phone is dying.

When you have IBS, IBD, or any other gastrointestinal problem, it’s likely you spend a decent amount of time in your bathroom. So why not make it a nicer place to hang out?

Read on for our list of ways to improve your tiny space.

Keep it clean

There’s really not much worse in a home than a dirty bathroom.

You’re probably busy, and don’t have time for a full-on deep clean every week. But keeping your bathroom clean doesn’t necessarily have to be super time consuming.

Chances are your bathroom is a relatively small room, and there’s no vacuuming involved (unless you just moved into a very old house with one of those carpeted bathrooms, in which case we suggest removing it ASAP!).

Just keeping toilet bowl spray, a general cleaning spray, and some rags or paper towels nearby for when you have a few minutes free can do wonders to keep your bathroom clean. A deep clean every few weeks is also a good idea, so set aside about an hour for that, when you can.

Put thought into your decorations

Have the living room of your dreams, but a totally neglected bathroom? There’s a lot you can do to personalize such a small space.


Bring in some nice things. A fancy soap dispenser, a small plant (aloe does great in the bathroom, if you have some sunlight), a scented candle, or whatever else makes you smile.


Like any other room in your home, your bathroom could likely benefit from some artwork. And it doesn’t have to be one of those cheeky “wash your hands, ya filthy animal” signs, either, if that’s not your thing. (Though it’s totally fine if it is! You do you.) Just a serene print of a landscape, or a watercolor, or any other thing you like, might look right at home over your toilet.


Pick a cozy bathmat or two in a complementary color to keep your feet warm while you hang out in there. Just remember to throw it in the washing machine at least once a week.


Your towels don’t have to go boring here, either. You can match them to your bathmats, or not. Just pick a color that complements your walls and décor, make sure they’re nice and fluffy, and wash them often to keep everything looking fresh.

Wall color

Bathroom wall paint doesn’t have to be blah, and you don’t necessarily need neutrals in a small space. Bold and moody bathrooms are a thing, and we love the way they look. Find a color you love, too, and do it up. Whether it’s the whole bathroom, just an accent wall, or even wallpaper, this small thing can really transform a space.


Finally, if you own your home and it’s in the budget, you can always replace anything in your bathroom you absolutely hate (cabinets, sink, shelves, etc.) But we understand not everyone has the time or room in the budget for renovations, so if that’s you, a lot of the above suggestions will go a long way.

Stock up on necessities

Is there anything worse than being on the toilet and realizing you need something essential from another room?

Not really. So be sure to keep anything you need nearby. If possible, find a way to incorporate a small storage cabinet in your bathroom—there are some good over-the-toilet options if you’re short on space.

Some things you may need:

  • Bathroom air freshener
  • Medications
  • Ointments
  • Phone charger...possibly with an extra-long cord
  • Toilet paper (just a friendly reminder)

Make your toilet work harder for you

While those rug-like toilet seat covers are mainly a thing of yesteryear, there are other things you can do to make your toilet more comfortable.

For instance, try a heated toilet seat, like this one, for those winter days when sitting down on a cold seat feels like the last thing you want to do.

There’s also toilet spray that traps odors, no touch toilet flushers, if that’s your thing, and even toilet LED lights that turn your bathroom into a little disco ball—fun, especially if your bowel struggles tend to hit at night.

Think about accessories

Squatty potties: they’re not just something to hand off at your family’s next holiday white elephant.

What are squatty potties? They’re foot stools for toilets. They’re also incredibly helpful tools in the bathroom, especially when it comes to constipation. They position your feet higher, and in doing so, force your body into a more natural position for doing your business.

And you don’t have to buy the big plastic ones, either. These days there are nice bamboo stools, as well as foldable ones, if you want to tuck yours away when not in use.

Wipe smarter

We don’t have to tell you that all that wiping is not always the kindest on your bum. So here are some ways to wipe smarter.

Flushable wipes

Regular toilet paper, even the super-soft kind, doesn’t always cut it when you’re using more than the average person. We suggest flushable wipes as a gentler option. Just make sure you’re not using too many at once—even the flushable kind can lead to clogs.

Bidet inserts

If you aren’t lucky enough to have a separate bidet in your bathroom, there are a lot of other options. Just google “bidet on toilet” to see them all. We love this discreet bidet insert, which is easy to install and easy to use.

Bidets are awesome for IBS, IBD, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, or any other ailment you may have down there, because there’s no wiping involved. Bonus: They’re also more environmentally-friendly.
